Plan types at a glance

Plan typeUsually helps withCareful points
Accident-onlyBroken bones, wounds, swallowed objects, poisoning, and other sudden injuries.Illness, chronic disease, and routine care are usually outside the policy.
Accident and illnessInjuries plus many new illnesses such as infections, digestive issues, cancer, or diabetes.Pre-existing conditions, waiting periods, and annual limits still matter.
Wellness add-onRoutine items such as exams, vaccines, parasite prevention, or dental cleaning if listed. It is often a budget tool rather than major medical protection.

How to compare fairly

  • Use the same deductible, reimbursement percentage, annual limit, and pet age for every quote.
  • Read whether exam fees, prescription medication, dental illness, rehab, and behavioral treatment are included.
  • Ask how the carrier defines curable and incurable pre-existing conditions.
  • Save policy documents and sample claim examples before enrollment.

When cheaper is not better

A low monthly premium can be reasonable for a young, healthy pet if the household can handle a larger deductible or lower reimbursement percentage. It becomes less helpful when the plan removes the care you are most likely to need.

The cleanest comparison is the quote that tells you what would happen after a real vet invoice: which items are eligible, which deductible applies, how the reimbursement is calculated, and how much remains your responsibility.
