Usually covered by accident and illness plans

  • Unexpected injuries such as fractures, wounds, poisoning, swallowed objects, and emergency surgery.
  • New illnesses such as infections, allergies, digestive illness, diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, and heart disease when covered by the policy.
  • Diagnostics such as bloodwork, X-rays, ultrasound, MRI, or specialist consultations if listed as eligible.
  • Prescription medication and follow-up care when tied to a covered condition.

Common exclusions and limits

  • Pre-existing symptoms, diagnoses, or conditions that began before enrollment.
  • Waiting periods before accident, illness, or orthopedic coverage begins.
  • Routine care unless a wellness add-on is purchased.
  • Dental cleanings, elective procedures, breeding, grooming, boarding, and special diets unless the policy says otherwise.

What to read in the policy

Look for the definitions section first. Words such as accident, illness, chronic condition, bilateral condition, curable condition, annual limit, and reimbursement basis determine how a claim is handled.

Then read the exclusions and benefit schedule. Two plans with the same monthly price can behave very differently after a large vet invoice.
